  • What's different about this file synchronization?
Many other file synchronization products such as Active Sync (tm) require a VPN (Virtual Private Network) for secure access to files remotely, where the Little Networks synchronization service does not. Other products also require that the entire file be updated even if only a simple change is made. The Little Networks system only updates the changed portions of a file, increasing your speed of synchronization. Also, some organizations worry that if a storage service provider goes out of business, they will lose all their files. Well, because iFolder keeps a copy on each computer that you synchronize to, you will not lose any data if a disastrous event happens to the servers or the company.

Can I use the sync behind my corporate firewall?
Yes, you can! The iFolder sync uses port 80, which almost every firewall has open to allow corporate workers to browse the web.

    Are my files secure?
Your files are encrypted on the server with 128 bit encryption called Blowfish, keeping your files safe (Even the people at Little Networks can't read your files!). Note that your files are not encrypted on your own computers, the encryption is only on the server and when you are communicating with the server. Communications with the server are encrypted using SSL.

    What are my computer requirements?
You need to have Netscape 4.7 or later, Internet Explorer 5.5 or later installed on your Windows-based computer. The client runs on the Windows 95/98, NT/2000, ME and XP platforms. You need to have run the Internet Connection Wizard at least once. If you're running Windows 95, ensure that you have the Winsock 2 update from Microsoft. If you're having trouble with iFolder, try using Microsoft's update site to get the latest patches for your Operating System. You can access your files using a web browser from any platform if the browser is Java and SSL-enabled. (Most recent browsers fulfill this requirement)

Can I access my files with my PDA?
Yes! If your PDA supports a web browser using SSL, you can access your files with your PDA. Windows CE and recent versions of the Palm OS have built-in web browsers. Note that as of this writing, there is no automatic synchronization for PDA's, but you will still be able to use your files.

Do I have to download the client?
No, you don't have to, you may access your files through a web browser. However, the client is the piece that automatically updates your files to the secure server, so it is a good idea to install the client.

How do I sync Outlook Express on 2 or more computers?
Assuming you have an account at Little Networks set up... install the iFolderClient.exe on both computers. Then, change where your Outlook Express email is stored (do this for both computers). By default, it's stored in C:\Windows\Application Data\Identities\{An unintelligible directory}\Microsoft\Outlook Express. You can change this by going to Tools, Options, and click on the Maintenance tab. Then click on the button that says "Store Folder" and choose "Change", then browse to the iFolder directory. Copy all your existing files from that above-noted default directory to your iFolder directory. Do this for the machine that has all your email, but not for the one you will be sync'ing to. Log in to the service with both machines (not necessarily at the same time). It will automatically start sync'ing. This will work for both incoming and outgoing email. There's an issue that may pop up, however. If you don't sync before you check your email, the files may over-write each other, which would mean you could lose mail. So ensure that you do a sync first. This means that you need to set your Outlook Express only for manual checking of your email, not automatic.

Can I change the C:\My Documents\iFolder to a different directory?
Yes, you can choose which directory on their hard drive you want for the iFolder directory.

Can I get a free trial?
Sure. Just send go to the Free Trial page on this site with your proposed client ID and then download and install the client from this web site. You will get 50 MB of storage space to test for 30 days.

What happens when a file is deleted in iFolder?
The file is deleted from your local machine, which is then synchronized to the server, and finally synchronized to any other machines that you may log in to with the iFolder client. If you accidentally deleted the file, you can either undelete from the trash bin (also known as the conflict bin) or connect to the iFolder server using a browser and download the file. Be careful not to use the iFolder client to connect, or it will delete the file from the server. If you deleted the file while logged in to the iFolder server, your only choice is the conflict bin. You can see what's in the conflict bin by right-clicking on the iFolder icon in your toolbar and choosing "View Conflict Bin".

    Is iFolder like a backup?
It's similar, but not the same. iFolder will keep an exact copy of whatever you have in your iFolder directory on your hard drive. So if you delete a file, it will eventually be deleted on the server. However, Little Networks backs up your iFolder folder on the server every day, and therefore can return you to a previous day. Be warned, however. Any changes that you have made since then may be lost, so you may need to copy any recent files that you want to keep from your iFolder before the restore takes place.

    What is the Pass Phrase?
The pass phrase encrypts your files whereas your password is to allow you to log in to your client account. You can make these the same, but it isn't recommended for security purposes.

How do I install the client?
Instructions for installing the client are on ifolder.littlenetworks.net, but a short version will be given here.
    1) Download client
    2) Run downloaded program. It's called "iFolderClient1.exe"
    3) It will ask you for your preferred language, then will bring up your browser with the licensing agreement. Read it and close the license agreement.
    4) Click Next to accept the licensing terms.
    5) The Default iFolder directory can be modified to whichever directory you wish by clicking browse and choosing the folder you want.
    6) Click Next, then Finish. (You may have to reboot your computer)
    7) The client will start up automatically when you reboot, and you can choose your username and password, as well as your pass phrase. Note that the pass phrase is a different thing from the password. The password allows you to log into the system. The pass phrase encrypts your files on the iFolder server to keep them secure. You can make your password and pass phrase the same, but it's not recommended for security purposes.

    Is there a Linux client?
Yes, there is. You can download it here. Instructions for installing the client are here. The Little Networks file sync server name is ifolder.littlenetworks.net

My computer crashed and burned! How do I get my files back?
When you get your new hard drive or computer set up with Windows installed, download the iFolder client and your files will automatically be downloaded to your new system.

What happens if I lose my password?
Little Networks is not able to read your password or pass phrase. However, we can change it to a new one without knowing the old one. Your assigned password will always be the same. However, you will decide what pass phrase to use. If you lose the pass phrase, we can reset it, after which the client will automatically re-sync your files to the server.

    Who needs this service?
    * Anyone who travels with a laptop (i.e. salespeople, executives, IT support personnel)
    * Anyone who takes work home with them (i.e. developers, graphic artists, office workers, students)
    * Small business owners who sometimes forget to do their backups.
    * Anyone who may need access to personal documents while travelling such as a passport, contact list, birth certificate, bank account numbers, health card, social insurance number, user id's and passwords (scan them in and store them!)
    * Anyone with large files too big to e-mail to their other account(s)
    * Anyone who wants to simplify backups

Can I have all my computers logged in at the same time?
Yes. When you are working on your files on one computer, the changes will automatically be synchronized to all the others.

Can I sync multiple folders on a single PC?
iFolder is designed to synchronize a single folder. However, you can use other software to synchronize any other folders to your iFolder, which will then synchronize to the Little Networks server. For instance, if you are using Win2K, you can use the "linkd" tool in the Win2K Resource Kit to create an NTFS junction point to point at other folders. Alternatively, you can use tools like "junction" found here to point other folders at your ifolder directory.

How do I change my password?
Because of the Blowfish encryption algorithm, you cannot change your password once it is set. The Blowfish algorithm uses a combination of your password and your passphrase to encrypt your files. If either is changed, the files would not be usable on the server. Note that this does not change the files on any of your workstations. If you would like to change your password, you would first copy all your files to a temporary location, contact support@littlenetworks.com and send them the password you prefer. Note that even if you send your password, they will still not know your pass phrase and will be unable to access your files. After your password has been changed, you may copy your files back into your iFolder and they will re-sync with the server.

    I'm getting a 105 error! Help!
This can be due to a few different problems, but essentially it means you can't connect to the server. The first thing you should do is make sure you are actually connected to the Internet. If so, then ensure you have downloaded any updates for your computer. Go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all patches. If that doesn't fix it, run the Internet Connection Wizard again on your computer. The iFolder client depends on having the wizard run at least once. Also, ensure that you have the correct login name and password.

Can I synchronize my Favorites in IE?
You sure can. You can just move your Favorites folder to your iFolder directory on each of the computers that you wish to synchronize. If this method doesn't work, there are a couple of other ways to do it at the following link... Novell Cool Solutions
